AMBIENCE: Named after the Bohemian Freethinkers Movement, Beatnik fully embraces the term “maximalist”. Situated along the Chicago River, the restaurant blends fun and funky with vibrant bohemian colors. A small bar near the entrance sets a lively tone, while the lower-level dining area is perfect for casual get-togethers. The lower-level interior is decorated with a variety of pink and white flowers that hang from the ceiling, adding to the excitement of the dining experience. A mix of different lighting fixtures enhances the maximalist design concept, making every corner visually appealing. With large windows overlooking the Chicago River, one of the city’s best natural features, Beatnik makes for a memorable dining destination. Beatnik is a fantastic escape from Chicagos frigid winter. When entering Beatnik, it is almost as if you step into a warm get away while never leaving the city center.

MENU OFFERINGS: Beatnik’s menu offers an exciting mix of appetizers, cocktails, and entrees inspired by different areas of the globe, including Eastern Mediterranean, Northern Africa, and Mexico. This eclectic range of influences ensures there’s something for everyone. Highlights include beet mutabbal, mole verde gnocchi, stuffed dates, shrimp esquires, and prime strip steak. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted with a variety of flavor profiles. The variety of fish, meat, and vegetarian items also makes Beatnik a perfect dining outlet for groups of friends that have different dietary restrictions (the menu is clearly labeled for those who have allergens/dietary restrictions but if you do have any questions the staff is knowledgeable on their menu offerings). The cocktail menu is equally diverse, featuring a variety of pina coladas, modern blended drinks, and margaritas (there are non-alcoholic options as well).

OVERALL EXPERIENCE: Beatnik on the River offers a lively and engaging experience. Service is efficient and there is no extended wait time for food or drinks. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable on menu offerings. The overall decoration and ambience is enjoyable without being overly distracting. Beatnik on the River appears to be a restaurant that focuses heavily on appetizers and cocktails rather than entrees. Although the entrees seem appealing, the appetizers seem to be the more enticing option. The appetizers are easy to share and are a perfect blend between Moroccan and Mediterranean flavors.
